The book I chose for this assignment was The Napping House by Audrey Wood
This book is about a rainy day where one by one family members and animals join on top of a bed to sleep there is a large emphasis on repetition as the book continues to add to a literary pattern of, “in a napping house where everyone is sleep” The sense of repletion offers support to a growing sense of cognitive development as it aides in the understanding of patterns and memory as the story goes on to repeat the characters in their order of waking up. This book also helps to promote language as it offers vocabulary appropriate for all ages and includes popular animals like a cat, a dog and a mouse- which will aid in expressive language. Teachers can incorporate different methods in their reading to the children in order to further this development such as asking questions about the images in book, pointing to and asking the children to name that object or character. As most books do, this book helps strengthen receptive language as the children participate in this reading experience. The napping house offers beautiful and describe images that also help promote development in various ways. The clarity of the images helps make connections between this book and their lives very easy. While I read this book to the two year olds in my center, I noticed those making connections by labeling the images in the picture. “Memom” a child said pointing to the picture of the grandmother in the book. Often time’s children who have pets at home would point to the cat or dog and label their animals, or participate in pretending by meowing or barking likes a dog. It was interesting to see the children in my center pretend to sleep while I was reading this book they would look at the images, point to the bed and say, “night” laying down on some of the pillows in the reading area. On a separate occasion while reading this book on a rainy day, a momentary connection was made as a child looked out the window, saw the rain and labeled it then connected it to the rain within the book. This book is appropriate for all ages and serves each age group in different ways as well s strengthens specific areas of development in each individual. An infant may learn more from holding the book, turning the pages and exploring the images they explore more with their sense. As opposed to a preschooler whose vocabulary and symbolic representation development can be influenced as they flip through or listen to this book. I really enjoyed reading this book to my two year olds, seeing them react to the book in various ways. It really illustrates to me how powerful literature is in a child’s life, no matter what age they are. |
