A rite of passage is typically a ceremony or ritual that signifies an event in a person’s life indicative of a transition from one stage to another. The three main aspects of a rites of passage include; Separation which is when an individual is detached from and a former status. Transition happens when the person is starting becoming detached from the old status but not yet attached to the new and finally, incorporation is when the passage from one status to another is consummated symbolically. I have recently undergone my own rite of passage by getting this past May. Though marriage is exciting and refreshing is opens the door to much joy about the future it is also a time in life where a lot of change happens. I began to separation process, understanding that I would no longer be my formal, single and independent self. I also had to separate myself from walking in the daughter shoes. Of course I will always be a daughter however my role has now changed from being a daughter and adult child to now a wife and a partner in a marriage union. Though exciting, this change is hard- I find myself taking on more responsibilities as I transform into a wife and one day a mother. The transitional period would have to have been the time of the engagement as I worked on separating myself from my former status of the daughter to a new status of being “wife material” I transitioned from single hood independent young woman into a married woman which now entitles me to be in unison with another person and be in constant partnership. Though through the engagement period I wasn’t completely single, and I wasn’t yet married- thus creating a sense of transition. Finally, as the wedding day came and the decorations filled the beautiful banquet room, two families gathered around with gifts and smiles all around they watched as my husband and now participated in a wedding ceremony- thus symbolizing the joining of us in marriage and finalizing the new role of me becoming a wife. I am excited to see what the next stages of life have for me, as this has been a beautiful change that I wouldn’t change for the world. -anon |
