Dakota's Pride is a heartwarming documentary about a father's search for the truth about Down Syndrome. In this 40 minute documentary tough questions are posed to and answered by a noted Harvard Physician, Down Syndrome Advocates, A Children’s Hospital Doctor and parents of children with Down syndrome. The answers are surprising and inspiring. In addition to being informative, this documentary celebrates the successes that have been and can be achieved by individuals with Down syndrome. There are several different children in this documentary who have Down Syndrome and though the documentary focuses on the Dakota and his family the inclusion of these other characters with Down Syndrome is important these characters include Derek and Nicole a married couple who both have Down Syndrome, Lee Jones a Down Syndrome Advocate who also has Down Syndrome as well as the Walline family who has 2 children with Down Syndrome. The role of these characters in the documentary illustrates the hardship but mostly the blessings that families with children who have Down syndrome are faced with. Dakota’s family describes their initial reaction to their sons’ diagnosis with Down syndrome and the many questions that they faced from the beginning. The inclusion of Derek and Nicole was to highlight the fact that children with Down syndrome are not as limited as common people perceive them to be and that though they have exceptionality they are capable of becoming independent and are able to be just as successful as or more successful than those without Down syndrome. The families in this film all talk about how it is common for people to place limitations on children with Down syndrome, but realistically these limitations are misconceptions of what someone with Down syndrome is truly capable of achieving. Including Lee Jones in this documentary was important because it highlights the documentary’s purpose in showing that individuals with down syndrome can be successful, independent and function just as people without down syndrome can .Lee Jones’ speech was important and inspiring as it described how he was able to pursue a college degree and reach many goals he had set that many people probably wouldn’t have believed someone with down syndrome could achieve.
The film answers many important questions about Down syndrome and what resources are available for families to utilize in order to help their children with Down syndrome be the most functioning and successful individual they can be. The film talks briefly about different services that are available for the families and how these resources were found very close to home. The best and most valuable resource that the professionals in the film said was the most important role for parents and caretakers to have was that they believe in their child and never limit their abilities.
Down syndrome has specific characteristics that are unique to this exceptionality. The most common features associated with Down syndrome that were evident in the children in this film include; Flat facial features, with a small nose, Upward slant to the eyes, Small skin folds on the inner corner of the eyes, Enlarged tongue that tends to stick out and causes mumbling when talking. The film doesn’t highlight specific abnormalities aside from large tounges however it does indicate that many children test positive after birth and only a small percent of those tested during pregnancy read positive.
I feel that this film was inspiring in the sense of perspective. The families talk about their initial reactions and worries present after their children tested positive for Down syndrome. The film shares statistics about awareness and knowledge about down syndrome and that more than half of the families with children born with down syndrome had misconceptions about down syndrome at the time they first learned their child had down syndrome. This is a part of the film that I can personally relate to, though I have always felt that all humans are capable of achieving great things I have felt in the past the at children with down syndrome wouldn’t be able to do certain things that people without down syndrome can do. For example the independence piece was a huge eye opener to me in that it helps me to understand that people with Down syndrome are capable of being independent and even getting married. The movie provides many quotes that really stuck out to me and opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that surround children with Down syndrome. One specific quote and part of the movie that really hit me was when the pastor was quoting the bible about a blind man and his disability and how people were assuming that a child had a disability due to sin but Jesus’ response to this was that this person was faced with this disability because it is “ the glory of god to be revealed” This passage spoke to me because it is such a true statement that who these children grow up to be and what they are capable of doing really brings the glory to god to light and that though misconceptions have shown them to be unable these humans are capable of much more. In my opinion, they are actually stronger than those without a disability because they try in places that are thought to be impossible for them, when anyone else probably wouldn’t try. This film inspired me in my perception of what Down syndrome is and how high functioning these children and adults actually are.
I feel this film does a great job in portraying a realistic version of what life is like for children and families with Down syndrome. I do feel more information could have been provided in the area of what an average day may look like but I feel the main purpose of the documentary was to show the blessings behind the disability and not the challenges. Though the film portrays some challenges and what the families face with comments from others, or fears from misconceptions. But I feel the film does a great job in high lighting what a families’ initial reaction would be. The film centers in on the father’s quest for answers on what are the possibilities for children with Down syndrome. This is a question many families face and the film does a great job in motivating, encouraging and uplifting families by showing the listeners that these children though they may have a disability- are by no means “disabled” or constricted. These children are capable enough to move mountains and achieve great goals.
Dakota's Pride has is a must see for anyone. I feel it was a very Informative and inspiring movie in which can help show caregivers and families of children with Down syndrome how they can be involved, educated, and determined to reach out and make a difference. I feel that these people are giving many others hope and insight into the endless possibilities for children with Down syndrome. This is a feel-good documentary full of inspiration and hope.
After watching this documentary I feel inspired and more knowledgeable about Down syndrome. I learned that children with Down syndrome should not be limited and that they are capable of achieving any goal; no matter how unrealistic it may seem. I realized that though I believe all humans a capable; I had set limitations for those with down syndrome or other disabilities and that was because I wasn’t informed enough about the reality of these circumstances and that these children can truly rise above anything and achieve their hearts desires. I observed families in their quest to answer important questions about the possibilities for children with Down syndrome. I also observed what the initial reactions families had to their children having Down syndrome and how that intimal reaction changed over time as they began to see the amazing things their child was capable of doing. Finally I discovered a new mindset to implement in my teaching practices and how if I believe in every student- regardless of any disability they may have; I can motivate these children to become the best, most successful person and encourage them to chase their dreams- believing that there is nothing they can’t accomplish.
